Miss Kim’s Story
As a young teacher, I started my career teaching in a school for students with learning disabilities. This experience helped me gain the ability and confidence to work with struggling students. After 2 years, I graduated to teaching the second grade here in the Miller Creek (Dixie) School district. The past 34 years, I have had the privilege to serve my community and help the children in my class to grow and thrive. Although I recently retired from teaching full-time, working with students who may struggle with learning is my passion. This new phase of my professional journey allows me to focus on assisting children who need a bit more then what the traditional public school system can provide.
Through the years, I have focused on students with learning disabilities, processing disorders, spectrum disorders and any students who struggle with reading and math. I am very familiar with the process of SST’s, IEP’s, 504’s, and other support systems in public schools. In this new chapter, I get to use my skills, connections, and experience to advocate for students in the special education system. I specialize in acting as a guide for parents about of rights of their students according to special education laws.
Most recently, I went to Graduate School to get my Educational Therapist Certification at UC Riverside. This certification exposed me to various methods for understanding and managing students with language-based learning differences. I was introduced to various phonemic, reading, and writing programs to use with students. I learned to design a specific plan for the curriculum so a student can be successful in learning. These compensatory strategies can be used with a student whether individually or in the classroom. I also have experience using various assessment tools to evaluate a students’ progress in reading and language arts.
By creating Miss Kim’s Kids, I can now dedicate time to help individual students succeed as well as acting as an advocate and guide for the families who love them!
